PHTI: Digital Mental Health Solutions Work, but At High Price

Virtual solutions for depression and anxiety may have a positive impact on people with mild to moderate symptoms, a new analysis(Opens in new window) Peterson Institute of Health Technology (PHTI) found. However, some pricing models can increase the cost of employers and health plans.

PHTI(Opens in new window) Be an independent evaluator of digital health solutions. In this report, it analyzed more than 5,000 articles, worked with clinical consultants and experts in the field, and conducted interviews with people suffering from depression and anxiety. It evaluates three mental health solutions regarding its clinical effectiveness and economic impact:

  • The solutions provided that provide digital content that people can work on their own (Ableto, dario, Headspace, Study Life, Meru Health, SilverCloud, Talkspace, Teladoc)
  • Prescription digital therapy is a FDA cleaning program that requires prescription (Daylightrx, Rejoyn)
  • Hybrid care solutions include a network of virtual care teams that provide treatment and digital content (Ableto, Brightside, Headspace, Koa Health, Koa Health, Lyra, Meru Health, Meru Health, Modern Health, Modern Health, Spring Health, Spring Shilth, Talkspace, Teladoc)

PHTI found that self-guided solutions have clinically meaningful improvements in depression and anxiety symptoms, while symptoms of depression and anxiety symptoms are not in treatment and reduce net spending for commercial payers.

Meaningful clinical improvements are also shown when prescription digital therapy is used in combination with other treatments. They can also save if used to reduce the frequency of treatment, the report says.

Meanwhile, hybrid care solutions have greater clinical benefits than the other two categories. However, the current pricing model that charges access fees to all employees can increase overall health care spending for employers and health plans regardless of use.

“Virtual solutions for depression and anxiety can expand access to care by providing a range of convenient, affordable and effective treatment options,” Caroline Pearson, executive director of PHTI, said in a statement. “Employers who provide these solutions as their welfare programs can see lower health care spending and increase productivity per user. However, to manage the overall total cost, employers must negotiate lower prices for hybrid care solutions and help users guide users to more affordable treatment options, where appropriate.”

PHTI also offers some advice to help increase adoption of digital mental health solutions. These recommendations include conducting more comparative studies, increasing participation rates and implementing results-based payment models.

The report is because the United States is facing a mental health crisis. According to PHTI, the incidence of depression and anxiety increased dramatically, and in 1920, the United States spent about $240 billion on these conditions.
