Mertens saved five games 4-5, then five more games 5-6, then saved the 11th match point in the tiebreak before continuing to win the game in the Decider. She will play the qualifiers Elena-Gabriela Ruse or the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
It is believed that the 11 game saved scores are considered the most ever played on the WTA Tour, although it is not an official WTA record. Last year, China’s king Xinyu saved ten in Madrid’s first round victory over Viktoriya Tomova. 11 match scores saved the ATP record – Adriano Panatta defeated Kim Warwick in Rome in 1976, saving 11 games.
Huge escape 😱
