“I hate losing a lot, especially in the finals because it’s like you’re so close,” Goff said. “I’m really ready for these games, yes, I think that’s how much I hate losing.”

Goff: Only number 1

However, Saturday is different. No matter how difficult Goff wants another big victory, she can’t surpass Madrid’s Aryna Sabalenka. It is safe to say that Sabalenka now has three Madrid champions, 20 overall, and hates failure.

Queen of Madrid: Sabalenka stops Gauff

Nevertheless, Gauff gained a positive attitude from a much-needed run to the final in Madrid, where she bounced back after being judged as the leader in the first match of Dayana Yastreska.

“I don’t know, today is tough, but obviously if I could lose that and then go to some unbeaten finals, I would accept that,” the 21-year-old American said. “Every time it’s a learning experience, maybe I need to feel that loss is motivating again, and even more inspiring the next one.”

Goff doesn’t like the way she serves in the finals, which she thinks is the biggest factor in the loss.

“My first serve percentage today wasn’t good, so I think if my first serve percentage was better, it might be a better match, or at least it did a better job in the first and second sets. My first serve was such a weapon this week, so I hope I can do better today.”

Nevertheless, the American headed to Rome with confidence in her rebounding form and longed for the next step.

“There are a lot of positive things to do, and I think especially since the last few weeks, I don’t have confidence in the ground, and I think it’s a step in the right direction and just want to see the enthusiasm for it all. I don’t like the first final loss since France opened, so I know I don’t like me.”
