When it comes to rankings, there is only one number with Coco Gofu:No.1.

After her 6-1, 6-1 victory Iga Swiatek In Madrid on Thursday, Goff told reporters she was not worried about what rankings Madrid would maintain after the final.

“Honestly, honestly, it doesn’t matter to me,” Goff said, adding, “The only number that means a lot to me is 1. Anywhere else is just a number. It’s just a number. It’s just a number. It’s just a number. It’s a reward for the work I’ve done and the consistency I’ve shown, but what I think of is the goal I think of or achieve it.”

For those who care about such things, Gauff can surpass Swiatek in the rankings if she beat Aryna Sabalenka in the Madrid final on Saturday.

Gauff recently regained electricity from Swiatek. After losing the first seven games of their competition, she now won four of her last eight games, winning three straight games.

“I can’t believe we played each other a lot,” she said. “I’m 21 and I think she’s 23. We’re still young and I’ve been in this game for another 10 years.

“So, I wouldn’t be surprised if we… ended up being honest in the history of tennis that most of the time.”

In the past, Americans were the victim of her own tension and expectations when facing Swiatke. These days, she says she is not trying to overthink things.

“I think I’ve called almost too many places in the past, and I just put too much pressure on myself,” she said. “Now, I just feel like, anyway. It’s like I won, great, I’ll win again on that in-person board, and if I lose, it’s just another loss.”

“I just tried to make sure when I played her, if I lost, it was because she won the game, not because I lost it myself.”
