EVS Floor Technicians Saved Allegheny General Hospital from Disaster When Water Owner Erupted

When the main time of a water broke down at 5 a.m. and released 1 million gallons of water, flooding multiple hospital buildings, Crothall’s dedicated EVS team started to take action.
The flood occurred on December 4, 2024 at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, but the hospital continued to operate as usual due to 12 Crothall EVS flooring technicians, and only needed to relocate some outpatient services. And, because the Crothall team provides adequate safe space for patient care, there is little delay in patient services.
“Our 12-class floor technicians grabbed the machine and moved quickly to every place in the water,” said Erik Brown, director of EVS at Allegheny General. “They worked throughout the transition to prevent water from damaging the hospital’s offices, examination rooms, suites, elevators and other spaces.”
The water flowed into the hospital for about seven hours. But equipped with automatic scrubbers, wet vacuums, extruders and other flood equipment, floor technicians transfer water to patient and visitor areas. Combining all 3 classes of butlers and flooring techniques, they continue to remove water and waste over the next seven days.
Brown estimated that they worked about 250 hours in seven days, pulling people out of their normal workspace and overtime to get the job done. After the water was removed, they scrubbed and brushed the floor, while most butlers subsequently sanitized and cleaned the building.
“The hospital’s leadership team is very grateful for our response to the flood and our ability to curb the water without affecting the service of the patient,” Brown said. “I believe this proves how much value we can provide in an emergency and improves their level of confidence in our capabilities.”
The hospital recognized the first class of floor technicians as employees of this month in December 2024. They include Cody K, Donald W, Guna S, Damar R, Justin G, Jessin G, Jesse M, Alex Z, Deron G, Dawn O, Dawn O, Walt Z and Deion H.
