DIY insect deworming lotion stick

Since I discovered how to make lotion sticks, I have tried different variations including sunscreen strips, Vapo-Rub sticks, etc. Today’s favorite: Deworming lotion stick!
They are as easy to make like original strips and look more effective in keeping bugs than regular homemade bug sprays. Probably because they actually cover the skin with a protective layer. They are easy to take away and the kids can apply it themselves.
What’s wrong with bug spray?
While I certainly don’t like mosquitoes or ticking bites, I’m not a big fan of traditional bug spray either. These usually contain DEET, a kind of research related to many potential health problems.
Some reported side effects include wheezing, muscle cramps, rashes and blisters, dizziness, disorientation and difficulties. Increased cancer risk, aggressive behavior and uncontrollable physical movements were also reported. Experts assure us that the risk seems to be low…
Ingredients for deworming lotion rods
Instead of being full of toxins like traditional bug sprays, this recipe nourishes and hydrates the skin while protecting it. It uses the basis of coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax. If you prefer a slightly hard bar, you can also use cocoa butter or mango butter.
I also offer a variety of herbs that are good at eliminating unnecessary insects. If you don’t have to use all of this if you don’t have it on hand, but I do think it’s better. If you need alternative herbs, just add more other herbs.
Hay works best in this recipe because fresh herbs can lead to infused oily mold. If you want to use fresh herbs in the garden, just dehydrate a little first. Here is a guide on hay.
Vitamin E is optional, but helps to extend shelf life and prevents rapid oxidation of the oil. I also added some extra protection with essential oils. These are more concentrated than herbs and help improve the efficiency of the bar. I love this childhood safety mix in plant treatment.
Lotion stick mold
I use a silicone mold to set the rod. These are cupcake molds I use, but I also love these hearts or simple flower molds, which are all perfect for gifts. There are actual bars as well. If you don’t have a silicone mold, a lined cupcake will work too.

Repellent Lotion Bar Formula
Use herbs and essential oils in nourishing lotions to avoid bugs in the absence of chemicals.
yield: 5 bar
Inject oil
-
Using a double boiler or glass bowl on top of the small pot, heat some water from the bottom of the pot to a boil.
-
Place coconut oil on top of the double boiler and add dry rosemary, cloves, thyme, cinnamon, cat and mint.
-
Cover the bowl or top of the double boiler and hold at medium temperature for at least 30 minutes, or until the oil is in a darker color and smells very rosemary. You can also fill the slow cooker with about half the water, place coconut oil and herbs into glass mason jars with tight lids, cover the lid, and keep the setting at a minimum to make a stronger infused oil.
-
Use a small mesh mesh or cheese cube to filter the herbs out of the oil and pour the oil into a double boiler. The oil will be reduced by nearly half and you should have about ½ cup of the infused oil. If you have more, save next time!
Make lotion
-
Add butter (S) and beeswax with injected coconut oil to the double boiler and stir until melted.
-
Remove from the calories and add vitamin E oil and essential oil (if used).
-
Pour the liquid into the mold.
-
Stay in the mold until fully set (preferably overnight). Alternatively, you can speed up the process by placing it in the refrigerator.
- To use, wipe the bare dry area of the skin to prevent mosquitoes.
- I use cupcake-sized molds in my lotion. If you use different sizes, your output will vary.
