Cedars-Sinai, Redesign Health Launches New Digital Health Startup

On Wednesday, Cedars-Sinai and Redesign Health launched a new innovation center that aims to build digital health startups from scratch.

Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai includes more than 40 hospitals and clinics, with more than 4,500 doctors and nurses. The New York City-based Redesign is a company that created a healthcare startup that has developed over 60 startups since its inception in 2018.

Bardia Nabet, deputy director of digital strategy and business development at Cedars-Sinai, said that together the two seek to build at least a few startups in the coming years.

He noted that these startups will focus on four main areas: nursing, personalized medicine, provider workflow and nursing coordination.

Nabet explained that the startup creation process will begin with the founder’s procurement and concept development. The hub will then provide these founders with access to Cedars-Sinai’s clinical experts and synthetic data platform, as well as a redesigned network of business consultants and investors.

Nabet added that Cedars-Sinai will be the first large-scale client to emerge from new solutions from startups, enabling real-world testing and rapid verification.

“We will be the first customer of the solution, so help try it out, implement it and engage in research to publish in academic journals to validate the solution,” he said.

He also noted that the Innovation Center creates formal internal avenues for innovation led by clinicians, with the aim of encouraging employees to become entrepreneurs.

Neil Patel, the company’s head of venture capital, noted that access to the redesigned entrepreneurial network will help guide clinician innovators into the risk world, noting.

“When redesigned, we have learned firsthand that successful healthcare innovations are not just good ideas, but about execution, market fit and clinical validation. Cedars-Sinai’s deep clinical expertise and commitment to patient care fully complement our model.”

Patel said Reidesign has dozens of startups that have built a repeatable process for building successful digital health companies.

By bringing its model to Cedars-sinai, he said, redesign is seeking to transform clinical insights into sustainable opportunities that can improve patient care.
