Professor Joseph Hayes appointed Chairman of the Data Science Committee |

In 2016, MQ formed our Mental Health Data Science Group to bring together experts from the mental health community.

Over the past nine years, the work plan has improved the source of data and the way it is used for research, mapping data landscapes, and informed policies and practices.

Since then, the program has evolved and has led to a partnership between MQ and Datamind, a national center for mental health data research that is changing health research.

Today, we are pleased to share that Joseph Hayes, professor of the UCL Department of Psychiatry, took over the chair of the MQ/Datamind Scientific Committee. Joseph is an honorary consultant psychiatrist at the NHS Foundation Trust in North London and an honorary public health consultant to the Office of Health Improvement and Disparity. His research focuses on the use of large electronic health records and recording data to understand the causes, treatment and prognosis of severe mental illness. He is a founding member of the Royal Psychiatrists Sustainable Development Committee and a member of the World Economic Forum Global Mental Health Council.

“I’m passionate about using data better to solve, understand and solve problems related to mental health,” Joseph said.

“It is an exciting time to be involved in data science and I am very much looking forward to hosting the MQ Data Science Committee. There are a lot of shoes to fill, but I want to build on what has been achieved, especially Louise Arseneault, the current chairman of the committee, current and current member, and support mental health data science to grow and grow and grow into a community.”

Joseph follows closely behind Louise Arseneault, a professor of developmental psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College in London and the PI of the Longitudinal Datasets. After three very successful years, Louise resigned as chairman of two MQ data science conferences.

They say that all good things must end, and that’s exactly what it feels like now. After three years of hosting the MQ/Datamind Data Science Conference, it’s time for me to quit. It is a real privilege and a great honor to work with two outstanding organizations dedicated to improving mental health research and so many dedicated, intelligent and inspiring people. Meeting world-class experts and interacting with great early career researchers has always been the focus of the role and I will miss it a lot. I’m so happy to welcome Joseph as my new chair and I’m sure he’ll enjoy everything like me.
