How to make almond powder

If you like almond flour as much as I do, you may find yourself in a situation where you want or need to make it at home. It can save you extra grocery trips or help you consume some extra almonds in your pantry!

Making homemade almond flour is easy, but I recently learned a new trick to make it more like a ground store-bought variety. (Hint: It involves the fine mesh filter I use almost every day anyway.)

I will also show you how to use almond flour as an exchange for all-around flour, and some trusted recipes to help you get started.

Ingredients of almond flour

There is no doubt that the only ingredient in almond flour is almonds. When you buy almond flour at the store, it may be made with a light almond, which means their skin has been removed first.

Using light almonds produces a finely ground flour that produces fluffy cakes and muffins, as well as biscuits with a more buttery texture. Usually, a light almond flour will give you the best results for baking.

If you want to grind whole almonds, you will make an almond meal.

How to make almond powder

Step 1:

In a food processor or high-speed mixer, add 8 ounces of almonds. If you don’t own a food scale, it’s about 1 1/2 cups of whole almonds and after processing it will produce about 2 cups of almond flour. (Because it gets fluffy.)

Secure the lid and process for about 30 seconds. Stop and scrape the side of the machine, then pulsate the almonds again.

After about 60 seconds, the almonds should appear delicate.

Step 2:

No matter which machine you use, some almond fragments may be lost. You can filter out by pouring the flour into a fine mesh strainer arranged on a large bowl.

Shake the filter like sifting flour until only larger almonds are left in the filter. In the bowl below you should have fine almond flour that can be used in the recipe.

You can return the larger almond pieces to the machine and try to process them again, or save them separately to add to the recipe when you want some to add a little texture. (For example, salad, quick bread or granola.)

Almond meal and almond powder

If you need a recipe for almond flour, it is very likely that you are using a light almond flour, which means taking the skin off the almonds before grinding them.

Almond flour is another popular choice made from whole almonds, which are ground. You can do this at home using the same method mentioned above.

The main difference is that this change is not that easy. (Most almond meals don’t fall off my fine mesh filter, so I can’t make it “good” in texture like a light almond flour.

When using almond meals instead of almond flour, you may find baked goods getting denser around the edges rather than buttery, fluffy or crispy.

How to replace plain flour with almond flour

Unfortunately, almond flour is not a 1:1 exchange for all-purpose flour. This is probably because it contains more fat than cereal-based flour.

I tried the chocolate chip cookies and found that I needed to almost double the flour, the recipe I needed when using almond flour. Therefore, when using almond flour instead of all-around flour, the bet on flour may be safer.

That being said, it’s best to look for recipes that have been tested with almond flour. In this way, you have no guesses!

Try almond flour recipes

Try one of the following popular options to get started:



  • 8 ounce Light apricot kernels whole or sliding
  • Place the bright red almonds in a high-speed mixer or food processor and process until grind. If using a high-speed blender, make sure not to over-treat, as the almonds will eventually start to release the grease and become almond butter.

  • For best results, do not mix 8 ounces of almonds at a time. (I tried using 16 ounces and couldn’t even the ground.) For the most delicate effects, I found the blender to work the most, but the flour I made in the food processor can also be used to make almond flour recipes-the final product is slightly granules.

  • For fine almond flour, pour the processed almonds into a fine mesh strainer arranged on a large bowl. Shake the filter to sif the flour through the grid. This will capture any large pieces that the treatment may miss, allowing you to coat the grated flour in the bowl. This flour can be used immediately in your favorite almond flour recipe.

Almond Chalk Notes: If you don’t have an almond skin tone, you can use the whole almond and make an almond meal. This means that the flour will have brown spots in it, which is due to the skin of the almonds being processed at the same time.
Storage Tips: Store the remaining almond flour in an airtight container in a dark storage room or store it in the refrigerator or refrigerator for optimal shelf life. It must be free of moisture to avoid spoilage.

How long does almond flour last?

As long as it remains moisture-free, you can store almond flour for 3 to 6 months. (This means your food processor won’t be wet when it’s processed, and you don’t slice the almonds and then process them immediately when they’re wet.)

Almond flour lasts for 12 months, when stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator or refrigerator. Usually, you usually smell when it starts to rot, so check it out before using it in your recipe. If it smells sour or bitter like old cooking oil, then it’s time to make fresh.
