“I remember the last game we played, and it was the final in 2017,” he said. “It was very difficult. He was so confident, so strong. He knew exactly what he should do when playing on clay. It was the biggest challenge I’ve ever had.”

Wawrinka, 40, is happy to be part of the main draw, even though he knows his Grand Slam Victory Day is behind him.

“If I were old and physically today, I felt really good,” he said. “I want to get better grades. I think I’m doing the necessary things. Everything is longer. You have to adjust. You have to train more results, which are not as good as before. You need more rest to train more.

“That’s life. If I’m still able to play, because I’m 40 now, it’s not common. So I know my status and I know how challenging it will prove. I think it’s a good challenge to try and still behave well at my age.”

2015 champion Wawrinka will face Jacob Fearnley of England in the first round of the game in Paris.
