Peanut Butter Cup: Follow the recipe below to dip each toasted donut into melted chocolate. Drizzle with peanut butter.

Cookies and cream: Stir some crushed Oreo cookies with dry ingredients. Or add them as a garnish with cream cheese frosting.

Chocolate Hazelnuts: Instead of nut butter, use store-bought or homemade peanut butter and end up with chopped toasted hazelnuts.

berry: Use blueberry or strawberry yogurt in the batter. Garnish with strawberry frosting or fruit jam and fresh berries.

Vanilla Egg Donuts: Increase the flour to one cup and omit the cocoa powder. Choose non-chocolate protein powders such as vanilla, chai, coffee or birthday cake batter. Sprinkle with sprinkle or alkaline powdered sugar.

cider: Follow the vanilla variation above and replace the water with apple juice or cider. Add the fourth teaspoon of cinnamon powder and dry ingredients.

Key Ingredients

Chocolate protein powder – Use protein powders that you already know you like. This can be vegetarian, casein, soy or pea protein for vegan donuts.

Cocoa powder – Look for high-quality unsweetened cocoa powder. As an interesting alternative, you can exchange equal amounts of hot cocoa mixture.

flour – I like whole grain spelling flour because it is lighter than whole wheat flour, has similar fiber content and is slightly higher in protein. White all-purpose flour, oat flour and bob’s red mill gluten-free all-purpose flour will work too.

For best results, stay away from almond flour or coconut flour. I include a low carb keto donut option in the recipe box below.

Nut Butter – If you are a fan of chocolate peanut butter, try almond butter or cashew butter for a neutral flavor or peanut butter. Sunflower seed butter, sesame paste and softened coconut oil are excellent nut-free options.

yogurt – I use free Greek yogurt here for more protein. Mashed bananas or pumpkin puree will work as well.

Sweetener – Donuts are naturally sugared with pure maple syrup or honey. If you want to replace sugar, add water as needed to form a dough.

How to Make Chocolate Egg Donuts

first step: First, grease the donut pan or small muffin pan. Set this pan aside and preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 2: Whisk the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl and stir the wet ingredients until well combined.

Step 3: Rub the batter into the prepared pan. It should produce six traditional sized donuts. Bake on the center rack of the oven for eight minutes or until the toothpick inserted into the center of the donut is mostly clean.

Step 4: Let the donuts cool completely, then carefully wrap around the sides of the pan with a knife and pop out of the pan. The cooling step is very important because it prevents the pastry from being separated.

Step 5: Add the frosting, glaze or topping of choice and enjoy. For optimal freshness, store the remaining time in the refrigerator for up to five days. Or frozen in an airtight container for up to three months.

For chocolate-covered egg white donuts, melt 2 ounces of chocolate chips in a bowl. Dip each donut in chocolate sauce.
