8 Homemade Baby Care Recipes (This really works)

If you look at my bathroom countertops, you will see them scattered with natural skin care products. Even though there are a lot of healthy natural products on the market right now, I still like to make it myself sometimes. When my kids were babies, I made almost all of their baby care products.
Even if you aren’t ready to jump on the DIY deodorant and toothpaste trend, you may want to try making baby care recipes. This is an easy way to ensure they use simple natural ingredients that are gentler on sensitive skin.
Their small skin absorbs our introduction, and choosing a homemade product can be an easy solution. These are recipes my very young kids use on their own. I will give it to them when they have babies.
Natural Diaper Rash Cream Diaper Safe!
I started cloth diapers with my third child and I was so glad I switched! Not only is it much cheaper, it is much easier than I expected. I’ve heard so many horror stories about old relatives’ vintage cloth diapers. Thanks to cloth diapers and better nutrition, my babies rarely have diaper rashes.
However, in rare cases, babies poop in the evening, don’t wake up until the morning, or have rashes in the car seat on the road, and using a diaper may be harder.
Some regular diaper creams cannot be used with cloth diapers. Some ingredients can even void any warranty on cloth diapers. Anything with petroleum jelly or cod liver oil can cover the diapers and prevent them from absorbing correctly. After a lot of research (and trial and error), I finally created a diaper cream that is diaper-safe and can be used with medicine. For extra soothing treatment, start by infusing coconut oil!

Baby Oil Baby Care Recipes
Regular baby oil is petroleum and most are full of artificial perfumes! You can always use regular coconut oil, but making the injected oil will add extra soothing ingredients and speed up skin healing. Both calendula and chamomile are calming as irritating skin and have antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and soothing properties.
Here is my favorite recipe for herbs infused baby oil:
Natural baby oil
A simple baby oil formula, infused with natural herbs.
yield: 8 ounce
-
Put the herbs in a glass jar and pour the oil on it. Place the lid on the jar and keep it cool, dark and shake it for 4-8 weeks a day.
-
A faster way is to use the stove infusion method. Add oil and herbs to the top of the double pot. Heat gently for 1-3 hours and replenish water in the bottom pot as needed.
-
Filter the herbs with crumbled cheese or fine mesh filter.
-
Use it like you will use baby oil regularly.
This recipe is soothing and perfect for any irritating skin, including eczema!
Soothing baby powder
Until recently, most baby powder was contaminated with asbestos (known to cause cancer). Although brands now choose cornstarch over talc, they still include other ingredients that are not good for babies. The iconic baby odor found in traditional baby skincare products is attributed to artificial (and toxic) perfumes.
Thankfully, there are many great options for natural baby powder now! You can find natural baby powders, like the organic baby powders like Eraornalics and Little Twig baby powders. If you are willing to make it yourself, it is easy and cheap to do so. You can even customize it with herbs to add benefits.

Homemade baby wipes
Eighteen years ago, when I was born at my oldest (it’s been a long time really?), I started making my own wipes. Like most DIY recipes, it is cheaper and healthier than buying diaper wipes in the store. As we all know, it is easy to wipe a lot of wet wipes between wiping the small burrs, between hands and face!
And I’ve washed cloth diapers a few times a week, so it’s OK to throw cloth wipes in with a diaper. You can also use a diaper to wipe formula solution and paper towels to make disposable wipes. Cloth is not only more natural, environmentally friendly, but also cheaper!

Super smooth baby lotion and lotion bar
I use basic homemade lotion recipes on all my kids and it’s enough to hold baby’s skin. It uses soothing ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil and vitamin E for baby’s soft skin. For the real little guy, skip the essential oils and inject the oil into herbs such as wire!
I also recently found that homemade lotion sticks are a better option. They help protect the baby’s soft skin but can still breathe. You can inject oil into lavender, chamomile, or calendula if you want, but the basic lotion bar works alone. I especially like using it for babies with sensitive skin or eczema. They are easier to make, last longer, and are also fun for kids.

Baby shampoo or wash
In fact, babies don’t actually need soap or shampoo. It is best not to wash off the natural protective oils from the skin. But if you are dealing with a major diaper blowout or other mess, then soap is really helpful!
If you do need foam soap to feel clean in your baby, I recommend Dr. Bronner’s sensitive skin soap. You can use it for soap and shampoo. When my baby is very young, I mostly use a damp cloth to wipe the mess. I will follow up with coconut oil or baby oil (above) when needed, which is not often. If you want to take a step further and make your own Castilla soap foam wash baby, try the recipe below!

Natural teething/relieve pain
I don’t use children’s Tylenol or Motrin with kids and I don’t have them when they are toothed. Instead, I chose more natural ways to relieve my teeth pain. In this post, you can find many natural solutions to survive teething.
So far, chamomile tin is my most commonly used tin agent for babies and children. I use it primarily on babies to soothe colic or teeth and use older kids who have difficulty falling asleep or have headaches or stomachaches internally.

Baby steam rub
The little guy with a little nose is not fun to them or their parents. Most steam frictions are not safe for young children because they have menthol, which causes the baby to stop breathing. There are baby-safe versions, but many versions contain ingredients for oil, which I’m trying to avoid.
You can easily steam with baby-friendly essential oils. This helps to stick mucus to the lungs and opens the airways to clear your breath. On the link below, find my recipes for homemade steam rubs, as well as natural store-bought options.
